Microsoft CSP vs buying Microsoft licences direct

You can buy Microsoft 365 and Azure straight from Microsoft with a card, or through a Cloud Solution Provider partner. The software you receive is exactly the same. What differs is everything around the licence: how you are billed, who supports you, and who is responsible when something in identity or licensing goes wrong. Here is the honest comparison.

Buying direct

Direct is self-service. You pick the plan on Microsoft’s site, pay by card, usually in dollars, and administer everything yourself. For a business with an in-house Microsoft administrator who knows Entra ID, Conditional Access, and the New Commerce Experience rules, that is perfectly fine. You own the whole thing, including the mistakes.

Buying through a CSP partner

Through a partner such as us, the same licences come with a few things attached:

  • One local invoice in PHP instead of a card charge in dollars.
  • A single point of contact for licensing, billing, and support, in your timezone.
  • Help choosing the New Commerce Experience term, so you do not discover a twelve month commitment after the seven day change window has closed.
  • Migration, deployment, and identity setup handled with you rather than left to figure out alone.

The licence price is competitive either way. The value of the partner is in the parts that are not the licence.

Where a partner actually earns its place

Most Microsoft problems are not licensing problems, they are identity problems. Random login failures, a broken directory sync, stale accounts, MFA gaps, and DNS records pointing at the wrong place. A partner that configured your tenant knows where those bodies are buried and fixes them quickly. Buying direct, that is your problem to diagnose at the worst possible moment.

The rules are the same either way

Buying through a partner does not change the New Commerce Experience. The annual term is still a twelve month commitment even when billed monthly, and seat reductions are still limited to the seven day window. A good partner just makes sure you choose the term deliberately. See our guide on Microsoft 365 versus Office 365 under CSP for how that works.

The takeaway

If you have a capable Microsoft administrator and want to own everything, direct is fine. If you would rather have local billing, local support, and someone accountable for the setup, that is what CSP is for. The licence is the same. The difference is who answers when it breaks.
